How to Change the Oil in Your Car

​Your engine is made up of plenty of metal parts, and because they often rub against each other, they also need enough lubrication to prevent overheating. As essential as it may be to change your car oil, there are several factors you need to consider.

1. Check the Oil
Before you raise your vehicle to examine the drain plug of the engine oil, you must first secure all your needed materials. You will have two most essential items to begin your oil change – the oil filter and the oil itself. While it may be simple to gather the necessary products from the shelf, you must first consult your vehicle’s manual to see if there are any oil filters and oil recommendations for your car.

• However, you must consider the environment you currently live in since it will have a crucial impact on the engine oil of your choice. Although your vehicle manual might provide the best recommendations, they are mostly for generalized vehicles in normal conditions.

2. Run your Engine for 5 Min.
If you have not noticed yet, oil can become a squishy fat when it stays too long in low temperatures. Fortunately, it is not the same for your engine oil. However, there are still tendencies for it to settle with dirt and metal particles in instances of cold engines. Which is why you must first turn your vehicle on for 5 minutes to make sure you can easily drain the oil.

• After warming it up, wait for another five to ten minutes and give the oil temperature to cool down a bit. It helps in preventing injuries or accidents secondary to burns from oil. If the vehicle has been running for hours, make sure to give it more time to cool down before draining the oil.

3. Secure Your Car
Park your vehicle in a stable, even, and flat terrain. Make sure it’s to also have the hand brake engaged as well. Use a hydraulic jack – the alligator type – to raise your car. You can also use a vehicle trestle if you have one to support the lift beams underneath your vehicle.
